On July 30, 2026, a minimum of nine migrants died as they tried to reach the Spanish enclave of Ceuta from Morocco. A surge of people flooded the border. Spanish troops were called in after local officials were unable to control the crowd. Ceuta’s authorities said that about 40,000 migrants came in on foot, approximately half the city’s 80,000 residents.
The European Union said Frontex would assist and urged Morocco to leaving by ship and road. Spanish forces maintained control over the flow under control and strived to prevent more fatalities.
