A Sydney woman named Carolyn has become the first person in Australia buried in a coffin made with mushroom material. The Guardian and the Sydney Morning Herald published the news on September 7.
The coffin is made from mycelium, the underlying network of fungi. It degrades rapidly and returns nutrients to the soil. People in the funeral industry say that more Australians are currently looking for greener burial options, beyond standard graves or cremation arrangements.
